Collection: Sunami Tōru Shōten

Sunami Tōru Shōten, founded in 1886, has been crafting items from igusa fiber for five generations. Ryuki Sunami of the Sunami Tōru Shōten has focused his work on crafting bags and trivets made from igusa. 

He exists within the long line of artisans and thinkers who have pushed the boundaries of our understanding of folk craft. The movement known in Japan as Mingei movement, sought to recognize the value of folk craft as a distinct line of aesthetic theory from so-called “high art.”
