This ash-glazed flower vase from Tasuku Mitsufuji is distinguished by four “ears,” a popular ornamental feature found in East Asian pottery. Initially, “ears” served to secure lids on jars for long-term preservation, but have since evolved into ornamental features. The glaze is made by Mitsufuji from the ashes of deciduous broadleaved trees.
The brown spots that bleeds into the glaze is called “teppun”, an indication of the iron granules in the natural unfiltered clay used.
